Stall @Crossings Republic

Recently Gurukul-The School outsourced its project Gurukul Grandeur; in Crossings Republic, Ghaziabad. It was a 3 day event from 25th December-28th December, and was a highly successful event, organised and managed solely by the students of Gurukul-The School.

It was first time that Gurukul-The School organised a stall, outside it’s school premises, and fortunately the first time went pretty well for them.

Students were given the opportunity to deal with the outside world, handle the conversations all by themselves, and learned the art of doing business.

Teachers were also their acting as the silent watchers of the event, guiding students whenever they faced any difficulty.

At the end, the event ended on a positive note, with the school looking forward to organize another event like this, pretty soon.

An Insight on GTS Grandeur

Description of our School Enterprise :-

Gurukul The School enterprise has three activities i.e aroma therapy candle making and environment friendly carry bags of paper and cloth and paper soap. The bags would be made from waste newspapers and old clothes to be used for shopping as carry bags. This would bridge the lacuna  whence the poly bags are sold to the customer at high prize  on the pretext of saving environment by the local malls. The candles will have the various aromas to sooth the minds of people and in rainy season would also have extract of the indigenous neem leaves to repel the mosquitoes, and paper soap will protect the health of students by killing germs and bacteria, these activities are going to benefit the community and give the students sensitivity to understand and value their healthy environment and also start their entrepreneurship.

Background :-

It believes in making its students self dependent and self exploratory and sensitive to the global issues within the ambit of Indian Tradition. Our school is a secondary co-educational institute with the students size of 2500. The age range of pupils is from 3-18 years. It was established in 2002 to provide quality education to the children of coterie of professionals and businessmen of Ghaziabad. The school firmly believes in imparting the values of Respect,Honesty,Compassion,Fairness and Responsibility among its students. We understand that the health  of a person is of foremost importance in any society. Mental health and a stress free environment is the demand of today’s hectic life. Therefore the various armoas that are available in the herbal industry like the rose,sandalwood,jasmine,lemon,etc. when added to the wax candles would give a stress free environment and the candlelight would add to the mystical appeal. Not only this but when neem would be added, it would become a mosquito repeliant. Mosquitoes are a great menace in Ghaziabad resulting every year in so many dreadful diseases like malaria,chickengunia,dengue,etc.

Therefore candle making seemed to be a perfect activity for the students.

Joining the school Enterprise Challenge was important for us as it would give our students the great opportunity to test themselves and their efforts in the real life situation. It would equip them with life skill and enrich them as socially, economically and emotionally sensitive global citizens of tomorrow…

The second activity was chosen as green bag making, to fill the gap in the system where the municipal authority does not allow the use of poly bags but the malls are selling the poly bags at heavy price. The customer bags made from old newspapers and old clothes would not just be useful for the community but also safeguard the already endangered environment.

Third activity was chosen as paper soap to protect the health of students because most of the bacterial infections are caused by dirtiness of hands. It will create the awareness among the students about their health and fitness.

Operational Plan :-

A. Initial Phase

In the initial phase, different teams would be formed to look after the various departments of the business. Everyone in their team would participate  and work collaboratively. The enterprise would be headed by the Principal and the execution would be headed by the Director Academics. The teams would work under following heads : Training, Finance, Planning, Marketing, Sales/Purchase. Each team would be headed bya teacher and a senior student. The resources for training would be the parents who have exposure of such acitvities and would volunteer to train the students. In this initial phase the promotional fest, during the Interschool events planned in the month of September, October (during Diwali) and December, would spread awareness of these projects and would work as occasions to market our product. Few places would be designated where the products would be kept for sale  including school and the shops of the volunteering parents. Various  promotional drivers in different housing societies would be conducted.

B. Final Phase

In the Final phase, production will begin when the product will be supplied to the various outlets, including malls and local shopkeepers. There would be extension in the core team of Directors. The suggestions and the regular feedback of the customer would be implemented to revise the strategy of the initial phase. This stage would also see that the share of the profit is put into the training of the underprivileged  students of charitable schools where in the Gurukul students would train them and involve them in various aspect of this enterprise. The venture would be publicized through internet and press releases.

Health and Safety Aspect : It would be the priority of the activity to ensure that all necessary precautions are taken before initiating any sort of training and production. Round the clock nursing facility will be available and First Aid kit will be mandatory at the site of production.

Resources : They would be generated through the sponsorship of the parents of students of Gurukul family and profits of last year’s project. The aromatic herbs would be procured from the market by making a negligent amount of capital. This capital would be generated through loans from School and opening shares for the staff members of Gurukul family. The sewing machines, thread,etc. would be taken on loan from the teacher volunteers where in a certain amount from the profit would be paid as a rental.

Sustainability and Business Development :-

In order to ensure that the venture sustains itself it becomes imperative that a constant control over the quality of the product is kept. The part of the profit is utilized for expansion of the business and some part is used for getting the raw material. It also requires the involvement of socially, environmentally and scientifically aware people who would constantly involve themselves for the cause of supporting the underprivileged and bringing them to the mainstream of the social structure. There will be continuous efforts to bring in the innovativeness and break the monotony of the existing varieties. The  student will subtly expand their managerial board. The demands of the customer will redefine the utility of the product.

In the next three to four years the business would move out from the boundaries of the school. It would expand to different places not just within the city but also in the Capital region. Due to the internet marketing it would also be available to the national and international buyers.

People, Profit and Planet (PPP) :-

There is a People, Profit, Planet criteria our school-based enterprise fulfil.

People : The main focus of this enterprise is to equip not only its students with the skill of entrepreneurship but also to enrich the underprivileged  children with vocational skills thus bringing them into the mainstream of the country’s economics.

Profit : These activities are profit generating and self sustaining. The profit generated would be used for social cause and for further proliferation of the same business.

Planet : The aroma candles are manufactured using all products. Neem which is the most valuable indigenous plant is utilized completely and marketed as natural mosquito repellant. Both the activities are designed to ensure that the environment is not harmed.

Sales and Marketing :-

Mega launch of the products will be during the class presentation programs (cultural and informative) to be held in the month of September. During the PTMs when the parents and visitors frequent the school, special sale counters will be put up.

Gurukul grandeur’s business is being sustained from last 2 years. Last year we generated income of $1047 out of this income 50% of the amount has already been utilized for charity purpose and donated to our adopted project i.e ‘Project Ishwar’

The rest 50% amount of income will be channelized for our business ‘Gurukul Grandeur’ for meeting its working capital needs. Money will be utilized for purchasing raw material for the already existing candle business.

We hope to make Gurukul Grandeur a bigger success in the coming years.

What is Gurukul Grandeur?

This is an initiative related entrepreneurship which will enable the students to work and contribute for the cause of underprivileged sections of the society, besides aprrising them with the concept of economization of resources and inculcating life skills. Through this project, the Gurukulites would get an insight into primary ingredients of entrepreneurship such as :- Production, Marketing, Selling and application of financial accounting. This would provide a platform to students to think beyond the bubble and nurture their creative and innovative skills.

OBJECTIVES

  • Empowering Gurukulites with valuable skills and experience by introducing them to hand on education on the challenges of running a real business.
  • Creating socially sensitive student entrepreneurs aiming to have a positive impact on the community by engaging the atrtisan community.
  • Inculcating the spirit of recycling non-bio degradable resources and using eco-friendly products.
  • The profits generated will be utilized for a good social cause.
